As a minimalist, I tend to prefer the “official” version of each kind of app I use. While these apps may lack the (glut of) features found in others, they almost always contain the most refinement. With Twitter apps, Tweetie, which went on to become the official Twitter app, was clearly the best choice. That choice is more difficult now that Tweetbot exists.
Tweetbot eventually managed to win me over with sheer personality and an extremely polished custom UI. It now has a place on my first home screen. While the “official” apps are usually the best, Tweetbot is one of those rare cases that sees a small, underdog developer trump a much larger company. This kind of thing seems to be happening more and more since the App Store launched. Good for independent developers. Bad for big, complacent corporations.
